Network Test

Network Test

The Network Test is provided to allow users to verify that the console is able to successfully receive network communication from a client before proceeding with a migration.

A Network Test is typically not required for a migration which takes place exclusively on a local area network, but may still be useful as a troubleshooting tool, especially in situations where the console may be separated from the clients by a firewall or router which is performing network address translation (NAT).

The Network Test is not intended to be performed from every client. It should only be performed on sample systems (e.g. grouped by subnet, operating system, or client-side firewall solution) to verify that the console and client can communicate if communication could be disrupted by a firewall, router, or other means.

Step-by-Step

  1. From the console menu, click Tools -> Tests -> Start Network Test.

  2. Verify the network information supplied: the Console IP (if applicable), Listener IP and Listener Port.
  3. If it is correct press Yes to proceed. If the information is not correct, click No and change the network options through the Configuration form then restart the test.

  4. The Progress Log will display instructions to perform a Network TesT followed by the message "Network test initialized..." The console is now ready to receive a test packet.

  5. On the client from which you want to test connectivity open a command-prompt window. To do this click Start -> Run... and type: cmd.

  6. In the command-prompt window type: telnet ipaddress listenerport where ipaddress is the Listener IP or the Console IP and listenerport is the TCP Listener Port.

  7. If the console is contacted successfully, you will receive a response in the telnet window stating communication has been established with the Handler and a request to press any key to complete the test. When a key is pressed, the test terminates and a message is displayed on the console stating that the test was successful. Click OK in the message window. To close the test, click the Done button.

  8. If any other response is received, the communication test has failed. To cancel the test, click Tools -> Tests -> Stop Network Test in the console menu or click the Cancel button to return the console to normal operation.
